27 – French Fortress Trail

The French Fortress Trail offers a unique blend of historical intrigue and natural beauty, starting at a well-preserved French fortress that gained contemporary fame as a setting for the game show "The Desert Forges" in 2001.

This fortress, situated near the Bait Ali Lodge near Wadi Rum, lies in one of Jordan's most picturesque desert landscapes, untouched by the tourist footprint. The area's tranquility and scenic beauty are a stark contrast to its brief moment in the television spotlight, offering hikers a serene and historically rich experience.

As the trail unwinds from the fortress, it meanders through areas that are popular among Bedouin families for picnicking, especially on Fridays.

Hikers might find themselves welcomed with typical Bedouin hospitality, being offered a cup of tea, a gesture that exemplifies the warmth and generosity of the Bedouin people.

Navigating the desert requires careful planning, including the use of GPS E-trails and our guidebook to ensure safe passage through the area's challenging and sometimes unpredictable environment.
